Caffeine Jitters: Why They Happen and How to Stop Them
In this article
You wanted focus. Instead you got shaky hands, a racing heart and a mind that will not sit still. Caffeine jitters are one of the most common reasons people give up on caffeine, and one of the most fixable. Here is why they happen, how to calm them down, and how to set up your caffeine so they are less likely to show up at all.
What caffeine jitters are
"Jitters" is the everyday word for the restless, overstimulated side of caffeine: shakiness, a fast or pounding heartbeat, feeling on edge, trouble sitting still and sometimes an upset stomach. They usually arrive within an hour of a dose and fade as caffeine levels fall.
Why caffeine causes jitters
Caffeine works mainly by blocking adenosine, a chemical that slows the brain down and builds sleep pressure. With adenosine blocked, nerve activity rises and the body releases more adrenaline. In the right amount, that feels like alertness. In too large a dose, or in a sensitive person, the same mechanism tips into jitters.
What makes jitters worse
| Trigger | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| One big dose, like a large cold brew or a 300 mg energy drink | A smaller, measured dose |
| Stacking coffee, pre-workout and soda | Count every source and pick one |
| Caffeine on an empty stomach | Take it with or after food |
| Short sleep, using caffeine to cover it | Protect sleep; caffeine cannot replace it |
| Being naturally caffeine-sensitive | Start at the lowest dose and go slowly |
| Other stimulants, such as some decongestants | Check labels and ask your pharmacist |
Sensitivity is partly genetic. Variants in adenosine receptor genes affect how strongly people feel caffeine, and some people clear it more slowly. Our guide to fast and slow caffeine metabolizers explains the difference.
How to calm caffeine jitters right now
- Stop adding caffeine. No more coffee, soda or energy drinks for the rest of the day.
- Drink water and eat something, ideally with some protein and fiber.
- Move gently. A ten-minute walk helps burn off the restless energy.
- Slow your breathing. Long, slow exhales help settle a racing heart.
- Give it time. Jitters fade as caffeine levels fall, usually within a few hours.
How to prevent them next time
The most reliable fix is a smaller, measured dose taken early in the day. Many people also pair caffeine with L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in tea and the most studied companion to caffeine. In human studies, the pair improved attention-switching and alertness: 50 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine in a 2008 study of 27 adults, and 40 mg of caffeine with 97 mg of L-theanine in a 2010 study of 44 adults. Another 2008 study found the combination lowered self-rated headache and tiredness, and a separate 2008 study found L-theanine blunted the rise in blood pressure that caffeine produced. Our post on why d9-caffeine and L-theanine are paired covers the research.
Where d9-caffeine fits
d9-caffeine is caffeine with nine hydrogen atoms replaced by deuterium, which slows how fast the liver breaks it down. In a 2022 double-blind study in 20 healthy adults, it was absorbed as quickly as regular caffeine and produced four to five times the total exposure over time. In practice, that means you can use a small, precise dose in the morning instead of chasing a big cup or a string of refills. Start with one capsule and only add more if you need it.
Who should check with a physician first
Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or trouble breathing after caffeine. Skip caffeine products, or talk to your physician first, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, sensitive to caffeine, or have a heart condition, high blood pressure, an arrhythmia, an anxiety disorder or a sleep disorder. Check with your physician or pharmacist if you take prescription medication, including stimulant or blood pressure medication.
How Vita Bloom fits
Caffeine 2.0 + L-Theanine pairs 22.5 mg of patented Deura9® d9-caffeine with 50 mg of L-theanine in every capsule. Start with one capsule in the morning, take up to four a day, and never exceed 90 mg of d9-caffeine. Do not stack it with coffee or energy drinks.
Frequently asked questions
How long do caffeine jitters last?
Usually a few hours, fading as caffeine levels fall. Avoid adding more caffeine while you wait.
Why does coffee give me jitters but tea does not?
A cup of tea usually has less caffeine than a cup of coffee, and tea naturally contains L-theanine alongside its caffeine.
Does eating help caffeine jitters?
Taking caffeine with or after food is a practical way to make it gentler, and eating something can help while you wait for jitters to pass.
Is L-theanine good for caffeine jitters?
L-theanine is the most studied companion to caffeine. In studies, the pair supported attention and alertness, and L-theanine blunted the blood pressure rise from caffeine.
