The Original Nootropic Stack, Rebuilt With d9-Caffeine
In this article
Before nootropic stacks had a dozen ingredients and clever names, there was the simplest one: caffeine plus L-theanine. It is still the most studied pairing in the category, and it is still where most people should start. Here is what the research shows, what to leave out, and how d9-caffeine rebuilds the classic.
What a nootropic stack is
A nootropic is something taken to support mental performance, such as focus, alertness or memory. A stack is a combination taken together, on the idea that the ingredients complement each other. In practice, many stacks pile up ingredients with little research behind the combination, and some quietly add extra stimulants.
Why caffeine plus L-theanine is the classic
Caffeine is the world's most widely used stimulant, and L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea. Together they have more human research than almost any other nootropic pairing:
- In a 2008 study of 27 adults, 50 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine improved speed and accuracy on an attention-switching task and reduced susceptibility to distraction.
- In a 2010 study of 44 adults, 40 mg of caffeine with 97 mg of L-theanine improved accuracy on an attention-switching task and raised self-reported alertness.
- Another 2008 study found the combination lowered self-rated headache and tiredness.
- A separate 2008 study found L-theanine blunted caffeine's rise in blood pressure without reducing caffeine's effect on alertness.
- A 2014 meta-analysis concluded the combination improved attention-switching and alertness in the first two hours after taking it.
These were measured over a few hours in healthy adults, and that is still more evidence than most multi-ingredient stacks can show.
Why the ratio matters
The studied pairings used about two parts L-theanine to one part caffeine, with relatively small caffeine doses. Most do-it-yourself versions, like a large coffee with an L-theanine pill, end up with far more caffeine and an unpredictable ratio. Our post on taking L-theanine with coffee walks through the math.
Rebuilding the stack with d9-caffeine
The rebuilt version keeps the pairing and upgrades the caffeine. d9-caffeine is caffeine with nine hydrogen atoms replaced by deuterium, which slows how fast the liver breaks it down. In laboratory work it acted on the same adenosine receptors as caffeine, with the same potency, and in a 2022 double-blind study in 20 healthy adults it was absorbed as quickly as regular caffeine and produced four to five times the total exposure over time. L-theanine is unchanged, reaching peak blood levels in under an hour. Our post on why d9-caffeine and L-theanine are paired goes deeper.
| Classic stack | Rebuilt with d9-caffeine | |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | Regular caffeine from coffee or a pill | 22.5 mg d9-caffeine per capsule |
| L-theanine | A separate pill, amount varies | 50 mg per capsule |
| Ratio | Depends on what you combine | Fixed, about 2.2 to 1 by weight |
| How long the caffeine lasts | Regular timeline, half-life around five hours | Longer, from slower breakdown |
| Things to manage | Two products, two doses | One capsule |
What to leave out
- Hidden stimulants. Guarana, yerba mate, green tea extract and kola nut all contain caffeine. Check labels before you combine anything.
- Undisclosed blends. If a label hides the amount of each ingredient, you cannot know your dose.
- Several new things at once. Add one ingredient at a time so you know what is doing what.
- Late doses. d9-caffeine lasts longer than regular caffeine, so keep it to the morning.
Who should check with a physician first
Skip it, or talk to your physician first, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, sensitive to caffeine, or have a heart condition, high blood pressure, an arrhythmia, an anxiety disorder or a sleep disorder. Check with your physician or pharmacist if you take prescription medication, especially stimulant medication, blood pressure medication, sedatives or antidepressants. For L-theanine specifically, see L-theanine side effects.
How Vita Bloom fits
Caffeine 2.0 + L-Theanine is the classic stack rebuilt: 22.5 mg of patented Deura9® d9-caffeine with 50 mg of L-theanine in every capsule. Start with one capsule in the morning, take up to four a day, and never exceed 90 mg of d9-caffeine.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best nootropic stack for beginners?
Start with caffeine and L-theanine. It is simple, well studied and easy to dose.
What ratio of L-theanine to caffeine works best?
The best-known studies used about two parts L-theanine to one part regular caffeine.
Can I add other nootropics to this stack?
Add one at a time, check every label for hidden caffeine, and talk to your physician if you take medication.
Is it safe to take every day?
For healthy adults following the label, yes, though any daily caffeine habit builds some tolerance. Our guide to caffeine tolerance and d9-caffeine explains how to keep it working.
