Earlier this year, a celebrity-backed, caffeine-free energy drink built around paraxanthine launched with enormous coverage, and suddenly a molecule most people had never heard of was in headlines, group chats, and search bars. If you got here by turning over a can and wondering what paraxanthine actually is, this is the straight answer.

What is paraxanthine?

Paraxanthine is not a lab invention and not an exotic new stimulant. It is the primary metabolite of caffeine, which means it is the compound your own body produces when your liver breaks caffeine down. When you drink coffee, most of that caffeine is converted into paraxanthine, and researchers have proposed that it contributes meaningfully to the alertness people associate with coffee.

So a "caffeine-free" paraxanthine drink is doing something clever: skipping the parent compound and delivering the metabolite directly. Whether that framing makes it feel novel or familiar is up to you, but chemically it is a close relative of the thing it replaces.

What is actually in the can

The drink that drove this year's attention pairs roughly 300 mg of paraxanthine with about 315 mg of alpha-GPC, a choline compound, per 12 fl oz can, along with flavoring and the other ingredients a beverage needs. That is a two-active formula built for a drink experience, and there is nothing wrong with that design.

It is worth noticing the numbers, though. Published human research on paraxanthine has most often used 200 mg, with trials spanning roughly 50 mg to 300 mg. A 300 mg can sits at the top of that studied range, and if you drink more than one, you are past it. That is not an alarm, just arithmetic worth doing before your second can.

Is paraxanthine safe?

The branded paraxanthine ingredient used in supplements has self-affirmed GRAS status, which stands for Generally Recognized As Safe, for the food and beverage uses covered by that determination. GRAS self-affirmation is a determination made through an independent expert panel, not something the FDA grants, and it is not the same thing as FDA approval.

The honest picture on the research: human trials so far are small and short in duration, and they have not reported clinically significant side effects at the amounts studied, but they were not sized to detect uncommon or long-term risks. Paraxanthine is also newer to market than caffeine, so less time has simply passed.

And one thing the marketing around this category tends to gloss over: paraxanthine is a stimulant metabolite, and in the one published human crossover comparing the two directly, paraxanthine and caffeine produced similar sympathomimetic effects, including increases in diastolic blood pressure and plasma epinephrine. Treat it as a stimulant in its own right, not as a soft drink that happens to wake you up.

Will it keep you up at night?

The clearest documented difference between paraxanthine and caffeine is timing. In a small 1986 study in six healthy men, paraxanthine showed a half-life of roughly 3.1 hours compared with about 4.1 hours for caffeine, though caffeine's half-life varies widely between individuals. A shorter half-life means less is likely to remain at bedtime, not that none does. An evening can of any alerting drink is still an evening stimulant.

Drink vs capsule: a genuine difference in tools

None of this is a knock on the beverage. A can is built for an experience: flavor, ritual, a choline compound alongside the stimulant, and a dose sized for impact. If that is what you want, it delivers it.
