Caffeine and L-Theanine for Gaming: Why d9-Caffeine Fits Long Sessions
In this article
Long gaming sessions ask a lot of your attention: hours of quick decisions, fast reactions and staying sharp in the late rounds. Many players reach for energy drinks. More are looking at caffeine paired with L-theanine instead, and d9-caffeine adds a new option for long sessions. Here is what the research says and how to use it sensibly.
What the research says about caffeine and gaming
A 2024 review of caffeine in esports and video gaming found 10 studies using doses from 40 to 200 mg. The results were mixed but encouraging: four studies reported cognitive benefits, two reported better performance in first-person shooter games, and one reported better Tetris play. The research base is still small and most studies are short, but it fits the much larger body of evidence on caffeine and attention.
Why add L-theanine
L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea, and paired with caffeine it is one of the most studied combinations for focus:
- In a 2008 study of 27 adults, 50 mg of caffeine with 100 mg of L-theanine improved speed and accuracy on an attention-switching task and reduced susceptibility to distraction.
- In a 2010 study of 44 adults, 40 mg of caffeine with 97 mg of L-theanine improved accuracy on an attention-switching task and raised self-reported alertness.
- A 2014 meta-analysis found the combination improved attention-switching and alertness in the first two hours after taking it.
Switching focus quickly and tuning out distractions are exactly the skills a match leans on. Our post on why d9-caffeine and L-theanine are paired goes deeper.
Why d9-caffeine suits long sessions
Regular caffeine has a half-life of around five hours, so a pre-session coffee or energy drink is fading by the late rounds, and the usual fix is another can. d9-caffeine is caffeine with nine hydrogen atoms replaced by deuterium, which slows how fast the liver breaks it down. In a 2022 double-blind study in 20 healthy adults, it was absorbed as quickly as regular caffeine and produced four to five times the total exposure over time. One dose at the start of a long session is designed to keep going without a refill halfway through.
Energy drinks vs coffee vs d9-caffeine with L-theanine
| Energy drink | Coffee | Caffeine 2.0 + L-Theanine | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | About 80 to 300 mg, depending on the can | About 95 mg per 8 oz | 22.5 mg d9-caffeine per capsule |
| L-theanine | Usually none | None | 50 mg per capsule |
| Sugar | Often, unless sugar-free | Only if added | None |
| How long it lasts | Regular caffeine timeline | Regular caffeine timeline | Longer, from slower breakdown |
| Dose precision | Fixed per can | Varies by brew and cup | Fixed per capsule |
How to use it for gaming
- Take one capsule 30 to 60 minutes before a daytime session. Start with one and see how it feels before adding more.
- Do not take it late. d9-caffeine lasts much longer than regular caffeine. If your session starts in the evening, skip it. Lost sleep hurts reaction time and decision-making more than any supplement can help them.
- Do not stack it with energy drinks or pre-workouts. Those are caffeine too, and they add up fast.
- Take real breaks. Drink water, stand up and rest your eyes between matches.
- Adults only. Many gamers are teenagers. This product is not for anyone under 18.
Who should check with a physician first
Skip it, or talk to your physician first, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, sensitive to caffeine, or have a heart condition, high blood pressure, an arrhythmia, an anxiety disorder or a sleep disorder. Check with your physician or pharmacist if you take prescription medication, especially stimulant medication, blood pressure medication or sedatives.

Frequently asked questions
Does caffeine improve gaming performance?
The 2024 review found several studies showing better cognition or game performance at 40 to 200 mg of caffeine. The evidence is promising but still limited.
How much caffeine should I take before gaming?
Follow your product's label. For Caffeine 2.0 + L-Theanine, start with one capsule. The well-known caffeine and L-theanine studies used 40 to 50 mg of regular caffeine with about 100 mg of L-theanine.
Is L-theanine good for gaming?
Paired with caffeine, it has been studied for attention-switching and alertness, both of which matter in fast games.
Can I take it for late-night gaming?
We do not recommend it. d9-caffeine lasts much longer than regular caffeine and can cut into your sleep.
