Energy Drinks vs Coffee: Which Is Better for Your Energy?
In this article
Both will wake you up. But energy drinks and coffee are not interchangeable, and the differences go beyond taste. Here is how they compare on caffeine, sugar and effects on your heart, and where a measured d9-caffeine capsule fits as a third option.
Caffeine and sugar, side by side
| Caffeine | Sugar | |
|---|---|---|
| Brewed coffee, 8 oz, black | About 95 mg | 0 g |
| Red Bull, 8.4 oz | 80 mg | 26 g |
| Monster Energy, 16 oz | 160 mg | About 54 g |
| Caffeine 2.0, 1 capsule | 22.5 mg d9-caffeine | 0 g |
Sugar-free energy drinks remove the sugar but keep the caffeine and other stimulant ingredients. Coffee becomes a sugar source only when you add syrups and sweeteners.
What energy drinks do to your heart
A 2019 randomized trial had 34 young adults drink 32 ounces of an energy drink, containing 304 to 320 mg of caffeine, within an hour, and compared that with a caffeine-free placebo drink. The energy drinks lengthened a measure of the heart's electrical recovery, the QTc interval, by about 6 to 8 milliseconds more than placebo, and raised systolic blood pressure by about 5 mmHg more.
An earlier trial compared an energy drink with a drink containing the same 320 mg of caffeine. Compared with the caffeine-only drink, the energy drink produced a longer QTc interval two hours later and higher blood pressure six hours later, which suggests ingredients beyond caffeine may play a role. These were small studies in young, healthy people, but they are a reason for caution, especially with large cans consumed quickly.
U.S. emergency department visits linked to energy drinks roughly doubled between 2007 and 2011, from about 10,000 to about 20,800, according to a federal report. That is an association, not proof that the drinks caused each visit.
Where coffee comes out ahead
- No added sugar unless you add it.
- A long track record as an everyday drink.
- Easier to moderate: you can make a smaller cup.
Coffee's downside is consistency. Caffeine varies widely by bean, brew and cup size, and coffee shop servings can be large.
Where d9-caffeine fits
A capsule removes the guesswork. d9-caffeine is caffeine with nine hydrogen atoms replaced by deuterium, which slows how fast the liver breaks it down. In a 2022 double-blind study in 20 healthy adults, it was absorbed as quickly as regular caffeine and produced four to five times the total exposure over time. That means a precise, sugar-free dose that is built to carry a long day, without a second can or a refill. Our explainer on what d9-caffeine is covers the research, and how much caffeine is too much covers daily limits.
Who should check with a physician first
Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting or a racing, irregular heartbeat after any caffeinated drink. People with heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure or a family history of sudden cardiac death should talk to their physician before using energy drinks or any caffeine product. Skip d9-caffeine, or talk to your physician first, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, sensitive to caffeine, or have an anxiety disorder or a sleep disorder, and check with your physician or pharmacist if you take prescription medication.

Frequently asked questions
Are energy drinks worse than coffee?
Many energy drinks pack more caffeine and sugar per serving, and small trials have linked them to changes in heart rhythm and blood pressure. Black coffee in moderate amounts is the simpler choice.
How much caffeine is in an energy drink?
It varies: an 8.4 oz Red Bull has 80 mg and a 16 oz Monster has 160 mg. Some brands contain 300 mg or more per can.
Is sugar-free energy drink healthier?
It removes the sugar, but the caffeine and other stimulant ingredients remain.
What is a good alternative to energy drinks?
A measured dose of caffeine, such as black coffee or a capsule like Caffeine 2.0, taken in the morning.
