Muscle Atrophy: Causes, How Fast It Happens and How to Rebuild
In this article
A few weeks in a cast, a hospital stay or a long stretch on the couch, and a limb can look noticeably smaller and feel surprisingly weak. That is muscle atrophy. It happens faster than most people expect, but disuse atrophy is also very responsive to the right rebuilding plan. Here is what causes it, how fast it happens and how to come back.
What muscle atrophy is
Muscle atrophy is a loss of muscle size, and usually strength, in one area or across the body. The main types are:
- Disuse atrophy, from immobilization, bed rest, injury or inactivity. This is the most common type and the most reversible.
- Age-related muscle loss, which builds slowly over decades. Our guide to sarcopenia covers it in detail.
- Neurogenic atrophy, caused by damage to the nerves that control a muscle. This needs medical evaluation.
- Atrophy from illness, such as serious infections, cancer or other chronic diseases.
How fast disuse atrophy happens
| Situation | What studies measured |
|---|---|
| Young men, one leg in a cast for 5 days | Thigh muscle size down 3.5 percent, strength down 9 percent |
| Same study, 14 days in a cast | Thigh muscle size down 8.4 percent, strength down 22.9 percent |
| Healthy older adults, 10 days of bed rest | About 1 kg of leg lean mass lost, and knee strength down about 13 percent |
Two lessons stand out. Strength falls faster than size, and older adults lose a lot in a short time. That is why physicians push to get people moving as early as it is safe after surgery or illness.
Warning signs
- One limb looks visibly smaller than the other
- Weakness, or trouble with stairs, getting up from a chair or gripping
- Fatigue with everyday tasks
- Twitching, numbness or weakness without an obvious cause, which needs prompt medical evaluation
How to rebuild
- Get cleared first. After an injury or surgery, follow your physician or physical therapist on when and how to load the area.
- Start light, progress steadily. Begin with bodyweight or light resistance and add load as strength returns.
- Train the whole body, not just the injured area.
- Eat enough protein. Many active adults aim for 1.4 to 2.0 g per kilogram of body weight a day, spread across meals. Our guide on how much protein to build muscle explains how.
- Be patient. Strength usually returns before size, often within weeks of consistent training.
Where PeptiStrong fits
PeptiStrong is a network of peptides made from fava bean protein, designed to support strength and recovery alongside resistance training. In a 2025 double-blind trial, 72 men and women aged 19 to 40 who were new to regular lifting took 2.4 g a day for 56 days alongside training and gained more leg strength than those on a placebo. In a 2023 trial in 30 men aged 30 to 45, it supported better strength recovery over 72 hours after a hard workout. Once you are cleared to train, it can be part of a rebuilding plan, alongside the training and protein that do the main work. It is not a treatment for any medical cause of atrophy.
Who should check with a physician first
See a physician for muscle loss or weakness without an obvious cause, weakness that is getting worse, or weakness with numbness, twitching, pain or weight loss. Follow your care team's guidance after surgery, fractures or hospital stays. Talk to your physician before using PeptiStrong if you have G6PD deficiency or a history of favism, a legume allergy, kidney disease, or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18 or take prescription medication.
How Vita Bloom fits
Our PeptiStrong Muscle Peptides deliver 2.4 g of PeptiStrong® in four capsules a day, the amount used in the published trials, as the only active ingredient. Take them daily with water, alongside resistance training, and give it at least eight weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How fast does muscle atrophy happen?
Quickly. In one study, five days in a leg cast reduced thigh muscle size by 3.5 percent and strength by 9 percent.
Can muscle atrophy be reversed?
Disuse atrophy usually responds well to progressive strength training and enough protein. Atrophy from nerve damage or illness needs medical care.
How long does it take to rebuild lost muscle?
Strength often returns within weeks of consistent training, and size follows over the next few months.
What is the best exercise for muscle atrophy?
Progressive resistance training, started at a level your physician or physical therapist approves and increased gradually.
