Search for paraxanthine and you will find plenty of pages calling it caffeine without the side effects. Where the "fewer side effects" story comes from
The claims that paraxanthine is less anxiety-inducing or less toxic than caffeine trace back mostly to preclinical work, meaning animal and cell studies. Those findings are a legitimate reason researchers are interested. They are not human evidence, and we do not repeat them as if they were.
The one clearly documented human advantage is time, not gentleness: paraxanthine cleared with a half-life of roughly 3.1 hours versus about 4.1 hours for caffeine in the same participants in a small 1986 study. Dosage: what the human research actually used
Published human trials have tested paraxanthine at single doses from 50 mg up to 300 mg, and a dose-response trial of cognitive measures found the most consistent effects at 100 mg and 200 mg. That is why 200 mg has become the standard serving in quality products, and it is the amount in ours.
